Note:

Another drawing by the artist of this unknown sitter (in black chalk and with more detail and finish) is in the collection of the British Museum (Museum no. 1898,0712.39) it is described as “Portrait of a gentleman a young man, half-length, almost in full face, wearing a wig.” That oval piece measures 7.1” x 6.1”.

Place:
The artist studied law in London but moved to York at the outbreak of the plague in 1668. He made a number of sketching and fishing tours in 1677. Place was a friend of Wenceslaus Hollar and was influenced by his work, as evidenced in this lot. Some drawings with brush alone anticipated later techniques. This drawing is apparently listed in Colnaghi’s catalogue of July 13-August 3, 1965, “Exhibition of English Drawings and Watercolours”, Cat. No. 18
